About

I first heard the words “my luscious temple” uttered by Melissa Etheridge. She was performing for a small crowd at a fundraiser for the Lance Armstrong Foundation in Chicago at the House of Blues. She was talking about her cancer treatment and how it had changed her life, her relationships and her body. She said that she would never take the gift of a healthy vibrant strong body for granted. She referred to her body as ‘my luscious temple’.

That moved me and I thought, that is how I want to relate to my body, as my luscious temple. I want to be grateful every day for health, vibrancy, strength, vitality and the yummy goodness I get to experience in my body. And I want to treat my body as the holy temple that it is.

Now, I’m given to all kinds of pleasure-seeking behavior, particularly good food … really, really good food. And sugar … lots of sugar. In fact, I’ve had a lifelong attraction to and obsession about food.

I’m not particularly given to intentional movement (exercise). I’ve never considered myself an athletic person. I typically find it uncomfortable and awkward, and I’m not really very good at it.

This love of food and disdain for exercise has not been particularly good to me. There are times when my immune system has been compromised and I have a number of other injuries and aches and pains that extra weight exacerbates. And mostly, I just don’t feel as vibrant and energetic as I want to feel.

So I’m going to try an experiment. I’m going to try to find a healthy balance between eating the food I need and the food I want. I’m going to let go of some self-imposed ideas about what kinds of exercise I can and can’t do and what kinds of movement I like to do.

I don’t know if it will succeed. Is it possible to be a 40-something woman with a penchant for fabulous food who travels a lot to still be balanced and healthy? I intend to find out.

This blog documents my thoughts and experiences, my intentional movement and the food I eat near and far. I invite you to join in this journey with me.

Love the Bayou by the Bay combo. I’m a former Bay Area resident now in Philly, missing the Acme bread and Berkeley Bowl, Aidells sausage, etc. Lucky you!
